Rigs

Once you have understood the methods we are to employ, it is time to master the rigs. A good fishing rig will be the difference between talking about the fish or showing it to your family. Here are the 6 rigs you need to know.

Floater Rig

This rig is a Gang of 3 TRU TURN hooks linked with Black Rolling Swivels ( Shogun ) The Swivel should suit the size of the hooks (EG) 7/0 size 3, 6/0 5/0 size 4, 4/0 size 5 with the Swivel on the top of the gang will stop line twest. Great for big baits (Pillies, Slimys, Yakkers, Big Squid & Big Flesh baits).

Live Bait Rig

A live bait trolling rig is great rig for toiwng bigger bait like Live Slimy Mackeral, Live Yakkers and live Tailor and live Bonito. This is best used for SLOW Trolling from just in gear up to 4 Knots. Best used for Spotty Mackeral, Spanish Mackeral, Wahoo, Cobia and Dolphin Fish.

Trolling Rig

This rig is a lead headed trolling rig used for slow trolling dead baits. The lead head is used as a keel this stops the bait spining. When loading a bait on this rig the two rear hooks go in to the Pilly,Slimy or Yakka as close to the dorsel fin as possable but only the hook barbs this allows the bait to stay supple the bait has to be supple to swim with tail movement. The lead headed hook goes into the middle of the nose and into the bottom jaw. The best speed to troll at is just in gear up to 4knots. Can also be used when drifting.

Home-Made Rig

This is a home made trolling rig. A very simple rig to make you need (1) 7766 Mastad 5/0 (2) TRU TURN 6/0 hooks and 3 Rolling swivels size 4 and some strip lead 2cm wide 5 cm long put the gang together then rap the lead around the 7766 hook use plyers to mold the lead under the shaft of the hook the lead acts like a keel to stop the bait from spinning. Use this rig the same as the trolling rig above.

Longline Knot Rig

This rig is a good rig to use for Sweetlip. Take about 80cm of leader line 30 to 60lb tie a hook to one end of the leader then slide a hook of the same size down from the other end of the leader stop it about 1cm before the eye of the first hook hold the line to the shaft wind the leader 4 times down the shaft of the hook then 4 times back up the shaft then back threw the eye of the hook this forms a knot. this rig can also be used for live bait. When using for a live bait put the bottom hook of the rig just in front of the dorsel fin the other hook just behind the rear of the dorsel fin . This will allow the live bait to swim away from the boat.
